How to Convince the Outside World You're a Normal Person When You're a Homebody Entrepreneur Who Doesn't Leave The House
I want to preface this post by saying that I do, indeed, leave the house when I absolutely must. I have at least a minor semblance of a social life, I just choose to spend most of my time in the comfort of my own environment. My favourite type of friend is the friend that is totally cool with not hanging for a while.
Ask any online entrepreneur who works from home and most of them will admit they're probably a bit of a hermit crab - it's just in our nature! Especially in the first few honeymoon years of business, your home office is where it all began, and a huge source of inspiration and motivation. There are, of course, times when venturing out into society becomes a pressing need and you actually have to put on a bra and wash, shit, even brush your hair.
These are the things I do to appear less like a Vitamin D deficient mole rat to the outside world...
eat your greens
I put on 28lbs in the last year. You know where that came from? Eating shitty, easy meals and sitting down all day. My skin has been the worst it's ever been with some serious blackhead and pimple issues and I looked washed out.
Since January I've been making an effort to eat vegan throughout the days. Lots of fruit and veg, little and often, and having meat with dinners and more treat foods in the evenings. Even just having one green juice a day (my current favourite includes mango, lime, banana, kale and coconut water) has cleared up my skin entirely - and I actually have somewhat of a glow to my skin! No more grey face for me, yay!
get a back massager for your desk chair
Because nothing screams 'normal' like back problems at age 24 (honest hour - that's me).
For our first anniversary my boyfriend got me a back massager that hooks on to my desk chair and god damn if it doesn't make me older than my years it was one of the best presents I've ever received! Truth time: it probably hurts when you lay flat in bed for the first time each night, or standing up for a long time makes your back ache. That's from all the hunching over you do at your desk/on your sofa every day. Invest in this beauty, trust me, you won't look back. But should you want to look back, your lean and supple back would allow for it.
Commit to at least one regular outing a week
I know lots of people would go stir crazy if they didn't go out for a week. Before long cabin fever would set in and before they know it they're 15 hours deep in to Hayu scoffing popcorn like they'll never see the sun again. For me? I could go a fortnight without actual sunlight hitting my skin directly and I wouldn't even notice. For that reason, I commit to heading to my Vinyasa class every Wednesday morning to get me out and about and feel like less of a slob at the end of the week.
If exercise isn't your thing, you could hook up with local fellow bosses for mastermind meetings in coffee shop!
get yourself some good skincare
Remember that washed out, grey, blemished skin I mentioned before? I've since found the perfect formula to battle that.
Bondi Sands Everyday Tanning Milk
The best gradual fake tan I've ever used - it keeps me looking semi human every day.
Philosophy Purity Face Wash
As pure as it sounds, this beauty keeps my PH balance level and has helped stop constant breakouts for good. I use it with the Clarisonic to get deep in to those pores!
Frank Coffee Face + Body Scrub
Flakey fake tan looks good never. This scrub leaves my skin SO SOFT and leaves a fresh canvas for the next day.
Frank Body Cream
Super thick and luxurious, this stuff is the bomb for dry skin that is used to uncirculated air.
I swap and change between which ones I choose, but lately I've been loving this Korean 'piggy nose' mask. It's an hour long at-home treatment that fends off pesky blackheads for around a month afterward.
Invest in a comfy bra
Sounds like an oxymoron, doesn't it? A 'comfy bra'. I know what you're thinking - I'm talking shit now. But my dear friend, I shit you not.
I've worn almost exclusively Calvin Klein soft cotton t-shirt bras since I went full time. As an entrepreneur you know bra's are a thing of the past - it's one of the USPs of being your own boss. But on the odd occasion the situation calls for it, you can rely on these babies to not be hideously painful.
